FAQ

Browse frequently asked questions about our practice and orthodontics in general.

When should my child visit an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic assessment no later than age 7. This is because, at this stage, we can see how a child’s bite is developing.

While most kids won’t need early intervention, for those who do, starting treatment while they have a mixture of baby teeth and permanent teeth allows us to guide jaw and facial growth. This can significantly minimize future treatment needs and help kids avoid the need for extractions and surgery.

If you notice signs of an orthodontic or airway problem prior to age 7, it’s never too early to book an exam. Some little ones can exhibit symptoms of airway obstruction as young as age 2.

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Over 35% of Dr. Robles’ patients are adults. In fact, orthodontic treatment for adults is one of the most gratifying areas of her practice for both patients and staff members. Health, happiness, and self-esteem are vitally important to adults. As long as teeth and gums are healthy, they will move effortlessly with Spark™ Aligners or Damon® braces at any age.

Is there a cost for the initial examination?

No. While we will bill your insurance company for the exam, there is no out-of-pocket cost.

Do you offer video visits?

If you are coming in for your first initial consultation, it’s best to visit the office for an examination. The follow-up visit will be set up (mostly through zoom conference) to discuss the diagnosis, treatment plan, and insurance/financial questions. We also offer video observation visits, as well as remote check-ins using Digital DentalMonitoring, to closely monitor the movement of new technology wires and appliances. However, you will need to come in for in-person appointments occasionally so we can evaluate your bite and jaw movements and perform any necessary wire changes.

Will teeth need to be removed for orthodontic treatment?

Straight teeth, a good bite, and a balanced facial profile are always the goal. However, because today’s technology has resulted in advanced orthodontic procedures, the need for removing teeth has been significantly reduced. Dr. Robles rarely includes extractions in her treatment plans, and, when she does, it’s because there is a clear health benefit.
