How much do braces cost? How long do braces take to straighten teeth? We have answers to your most pressing questions about treatment.
What are braces?
Braces are a type of fixed orthodontic appliance that relies on a system of brackets and wires to exert pressure that shifts the teeth into place. Modern Zen Orthodontics is a leading provider of Damon® braces in Germantown, MD. This advanced braces system utilizes unique tie-less, self-ligating brackets, and shape-memory wires to achieve better results in less time and with less discomfort.
How do braces work?
Damon braces consist of streamlined brackets and thin archwires that apply gentle, continuous force that triggers a natural process called bone remodeling. The bone breaks down (don’t worry, it’s painless!) and the ligaments loosen, allowing the teeth to move where the braces guide them. Over time, new bone forms, and the ligaments tighten back up, securing the teeth in place for a lasting, beautiful smile.
How long does braces treatment take?
Braces treatment varies for each patient and the duration is based on individual needs and the complexity of the case. On average, treatment can range from 12 to 30 months, with most patients finishing in about 18 to 22 months.
How often will I need to visit Modern Zen Orthodontics during treatment?
Typically, our Germantown Damon braces patients visit us every eight to 10 weeks for a checkup. This lets Dr. Robles monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments. We also offer Digital DentalMonitoring, so we can track your treatment remotely as well. During the last few months of your treatment, Dr. Robles may want to see you more often, usually every four to six weeks, to finetune your final tooth movements.
Do braces hurt?
You should never feel any serious braces pain. However, you might have mild discomfort for a few days after getting your braces put on and, sometimes, following adjustments. The tenderness is mild and will subside quickly. To ease discomfort, stick with soft foods. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever (whatever you’d normally take for a headache) as needed.
What happens when I get my braces put on?
The process of getting braces is quick and painless. Dr. Robles will gently bond the brackets to your teeth using a special adhesive and secure them with archwires. Before you leave, our team will teach you how to care for your new braces.
What happens when my braces are removed?
Getting your braces taken off is also painless. Dr. Robles will carefully take off the brackets and wires, then polish your teeth to remove any adhesive. You’ll be able to admire your new smile right away. We’ll also provide you with custom retainers to wear to keep your teeth beautifully aligned.
Do I need to brush my teeth more often with braces?
Yes. Braces can trap food particles and plaque, increasing the risk of tooth decay, white spots, and gum disease. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, brush after meals and snacks, and floss at least once a day.
How can I take care of my teeth with braces?
- Brush after every meal and floss daily.
- Avoid sticky, hard, chewy, and sugary foods to protect your braces and wires and minimize plaque buildup.
- Continue to see your general dentist for routine check-ups and cleanings every three to six months.
Do I still need dental check-ups during braces treatment?
Yes, absolutely! Regular dental visits are essential to keep your teeth and gums healthy during braces treatment. Your dentist will help remove plaque buildup, check for cavities, and ensure your smile stays on track.
Will braces interfere with sports, playing instruments, or singing?
You can still enjoy all your favorite activities with braces. There might be a brief adjustment period, but soon enough, you’ll be back to singing, playing instruments, and enjoying sports. For contact sports, remember to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth.
How much do braces cost?
The cost of braces depends on your specific treatment plan and the complexity of your case. At Modern Zen Orthodontics, we accept many insurance plans and offer a variety of payment options. You can also use your HSA or FSA for braces treatment.
